What a long week!

Oh wow. I’m glad I don’t have too many weeks like this. Too keep it short, work kept me hopping. Between one person transfering to another store, and another person who had car trouble while she was on vacation in another state, I was the only person who could work my department this week. Can you say overtime? :-) The pay check is going to be nice, but I am so ready for a day off! *LOL*

Sorry that I (yet again) don’t have a photo-related post. (I swear this IS a photography blog! Honest!) I’m thinking that Saturday afternoon or Sunday on my day off, I’ll haul out my camera and shoot something. :-D

Keep checking back, and perhaps I’ll just give out a surprise to whoever leaves a comment for me!

Memorial Day

It’s probably partly because it’s 1:10 in the morning, and I really should be sleeping, but this news story had tears running down my face. “Miracle Marine” Today is Memorial Day. Somehow this day has become another day for stores to sell things, people to get the day off of work (or whine because they didn’t), and other people to “kick off summer” on the lake or barbequing or whatever. Certainly we see the flags the city puts up, and we remember that it’s supposed to be a day set aside to remember our fallen heroes. But do we really do much more than have a passing thought?

Inspired by this news article, I did a bit of research. You can find out more information about Memorial Day here. US Memorial Day Did you know that Memorial Day was first observed on May 30th, 1868? And that it took until 1873 for the first state – New York – to officially recognize it? Memorial Day is now celebrated on the last Monday of May, thanks to Congress in 1971 to ensure a three day weekend for federal holidays.

To quote from usmemorialday.org “To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed on Dec 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.” “

I think it’s a neat idea. I know what I’ll do at 3pm today.

I know this isn’t a photo-related post, but it does touch on something that is important to me, and I wanted to share. Don’t get me wrong, I hope everyone has a fun Memorial Day weekend, but sometimes it’s good to remember why we have this holiday.

My next post won’t be as serious. I promise. ;-)

Busy day.

Not only did I get my Op:Love approval, I went “live” with my new website, and managed to break my lawnmower. Dang it. That’s what I get for trying to mow rocks. Big rocks. Grr…. Now I have to let the backyard get even longer while I get the stupid thing fixed. My own darn fault…

But enough about that. I did get my new website finished to a point where I was happy with it, so I decided enough talk. It was time to show. So there it is! I’m sure you noticed it right away, it’s hard to miss. :-)

Let me know what you think about the site! Email me or add a comment below. Now it’s after midnight, and since I have to work tomorrow, I’d better go find my bed.

Yeah! I'm approved!

I just received my approval letter from Operation: Love ReUnited. http://www.oplove.org/ For those who are unfamiliar with this wonderful organization, I’ll give you the brief version. It is an organization that connects photographers with the families of our military. If you have a family member who is about to be deployed, currently overseas, or soon to return home, Op:Love photographers offer a free special session in honor of our brave service men and women.

All Operation: Love ReUnited photographers give a free patriotic portrait session and 4×6 proof book. In addition, I am offering a complimentary 11×14 wall portrait of your session. As always, I offer a 20% discount on all my products and services to our military and their immediate familes, reguardless of deployment status. All the terms and conditions for participating in the Op:Love program can be found on their website.

This is exciting for me, as I wanted to do something for our military. Both of my grandfathers served during World War II. My dad was a member of the National Guard for more years than I know. My brother is currently in the National Guard and was stationed in Afghanistan for a year. I understand the worry and fears of having a loved one over seas in this dangerous time.

Off to go update my website with this exciting news!
